Abstract Harmonic distortion is an important problem related to power quality in modern powersystems Non linear loads which are the main reason for harmonic distortion cause non sinusoidal currents which in turn lead to non sinusoidal voltages i e voltage distortion Both current and voltage distortion result in undesirable effects such as increased losses control system mal operation voltage stress increased EMI and so on During recentmeasurements in the National Western Grid of Iran it was observed that some harmonicindices exceed the standard levels The root of this distortion could not be identified andthus it was decided to launch a thorough study on the modeling and simulation of this partof network with the aim of identification of the harmonic distortion reason In this regard the network including transmission lines transformers and loads were modeled DIgSILENT software was used to perform harmonic studies It was shown that parallelresonance near some characteriestic harmonics are the main reason for harmonic distortion
