AbstractHigh harmonic distortions of conventional rectifiers used in industry and their THD sincompliance with the new power quality standards like IEC 61000 3 2 caused PFC rectifiers to substitute their conventional counterparts These rectifiers supply the loadpower at nominal output voltage with a limited ripple and take almost sinusoidal inputcurrent from utility The control of PFC rectifiers has been carried out classically by special ICs like UC3854 In this method in order to eliminate the effect of output ripple on input current and toachieve high power factor a controller with 10 to 25 Hz bandwidth is used in the voltagecontrol loop Although this low bandwidth results in almost sinusoidal input current itslows down the dynamic response of the rectifier and causes large amplitude transients inthe output voltage during step load changes The amplitudes of these transients are severaltimes larger than the steady state ripple amplitude and sustain for several input voltagecycles This creates problem in operation of sensitive loads and limits the application ofthese rectifiers In this thesis classical method for controlling PFC rectifiers have been investigated and thetrade off between high power factor in steady state and fast dynamic response duringtransients is presented Also the methods reported in literature for improving the dynamicof PFC rectifiers have been reviewed Then a method for improving PFC rectifiersdynamic response to step load changes while keeping high power factor in steady state hasbeen proposed The simulation results performed by modeling the rectifier and controllerin VHDL are given Also the proposed method implemented on an FPGA of Spartan 2family and the simulation results of Post Place and Route Simulation Model verify thesatisfactory operation of the method and its implementation
