135Abstract This project consistes of two independent parts The first part describes oxidation of alcoholsto aldehydes with methyltriphenylphosphonium dichromate MTPPDC in the presencs andabsence of bismuth chlorid in dichlorometan as solvent MTPPDC has been used for oxidationof alcohols under solvent free conditions and microwave irradiation as a novel and efficientreagent Also thiols have been oxidized to corresponding disulfides whit high yield in dichloromthansolvent Products have been identified by Mass Spectroscopy 1H NMR IR analysis and theirmelting point or boiling points In the second part of this study a new reagent for reduction of carbonyl compounds isreported Sodium borohydride is a mild reagent and is mostly used for the reduction ofaldehydes and ketones in protic solvents Tetramethylammonium borohydride is usefulreagent for reduction of carbonyl compounds Some advantages of this reagent are Selectivereduction of aldehyde in presence of ketone fast reaction and straight forward extraction ofproducts Products have been identified by Mass Spectroscopy 1H NMR IR and their meltingpoint or boiling points
