AbstractNitrogen oxides NOx are among the most pollutant species resulting from the combustionphenomena Unfortunately all the available measures to alleviate the formation and emissionof NOx inhibit the combustion efficiency Therefore accurate estimation of NOx incombustion phenomena is an important factor in designing the combustion chambers Thepresent study addresses this issue It starts with a comprehensive survey on different physicalmechanisms of formation and emission of NOx Then a thorough study on mathematicalmodels of the aforementioned mechanisms is presented Based on the limitations in predictingreactive species from the main computer code a transport equation for the main NOxconstituent is presented Several sub models are presented and discussed to express the sourceterm in this transport equation The turbulence chemistry interaction is taken into account viaa presumed pdf of the mixture fraction A post processing computer program with severaloptions of the NOx models is developed The validity of NOx models and the correctness ofthe program have been assessed by simulating several diffusion flames and comparing theresults with the available experimental data It is concluded that the turbulence chemistryinteraction has a profound effect on the accuracy of predictions The simple combustionmodel used for the combustion calculations together with the developed program based onvarious NOx models are able to predict combustion and NOx formation and emissions to fairdegree of accuracy Furthermore a preliminary study has been carried out to investigate thepossibility of using a unified Artificial Neural Network ANN model for NOx
