Abstract Slab width reduction is one of the processes that is performed on input slab in rollingmills This process is used in order to synchronize width of continues caster output slabwith the required slab width in hot rolling mill Today two width reduction methods areapplied vertical rolling and sizing press Comparison of the two mentioned methods isrequired due to important effects of width reduction processes on slab and quality ofproduced strip In this research deformation property of slab in sizing press mill is studied by explicitfinite element method assuming elasto viscoplastic constitutive model Effect of differentinput parameters such as initial slab width and thickness amount of width reduction feedpitch and anvil speed on process outputs such as dogbone formation head and tail fishtails width necking at the leading end of slab and slab edge quality are also studied Subsequently slab width reduction is considered for both sizing press and verticalrolling methods and width reduction efficiency is evaluated for both processes Theamount of width return back spread which is one of the most important factors related towidth reduction efficiency and slab geometry after the first horizontal rolling pass are alsodiscussed in this study
