Abstract Prediction of the residual stresses and the distortion are the most importantproblems in the welded process The main goal of this dissertation is to simulate atypical multi electrode submerged arc welding MESAW process Submerged arcwelding technique is usually used on panel for long welding process of plates withthicknesses between 6 mm to 45 mm specially in manufacturing ships and largdiameter pipes The process has been simulated as a two dimensional problem withthe finite element method in order to determine the residual stresses and thedistortions induced by them also the benefit effect that preheating has on them Amethod of placing heat sources in different locations with different durations in orderto reduce the angular distortion has been examinated The simulations have beenperformed by ABAQUS Standard Ver 6 5 specialize codes written for this purpose The main code contains two fully uncoupled steps one mechanical and the otherthermal From the last solution the thermal history is obtained and the mechanicalsolution gives us the stress and strain distribution As a special case deformation of aplate on a rigid surface is calculated employing contact elements answers of residualstress for this problem is compared with one fixed on its support Comparing theresults of this thesis with experimental and analytical result of other researchersreveals a good agreement
