Abstract The knowledge of genetic control heritability heterosis and inbreeding effects of grain yield and yield component of safflower are essential to design an appropriate breeding program The main objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for different traits in safflower using the generation mean analysis The populations of F1 F2 F3 BC1 and BC2 which were produced from the crosses of Saffire IUTE and IUTKH IUTC genotypes along with their parental lines were evaluated for agronomic traits in a randomized complete block design with three replication The analysis of variance showed the effect of generation was significant for all traits except for days to maturity in cross of IUTKH IUTC The genetic parameter of S dh was less than unite for all traits in both crosses indicating that both of D H sign and magnitude of degree of degree of dominance differed in different loci The component of additive variance D was much higher than dominance component for all traits A simple additive dominant model had inadequacy to explain the variation among the generations for all the traits in both crosses indicating that gene interaction effects epistais may have significant effect on genetic control of these traits It was also concluded that trigenic interaction effects or maternal effects interfere on genetic control of heads per plant seeds per head and 100 seed weight in both crosses Because of more important roll of additive effects of genes on genetic control of grain yield selection for improvement of this trait can be effective The narrow sense heritability for grain yield per plant was lower than the other traits and the expected genetic advance for seed yield per plant was 7 76 and 6 92 in the first and second crosses respectively The number of heads per plant and seeds per head can be used as selection criteria for improvement of grain yield since these traits had the highest genetic and phenotype correlation coefficients with grain yield per plant and also had high broad and narrow sense heritability The heterosis value over the mid parent was 33 96 and 29 38 for heads and seed yield per plant respectively in cross IUTKH IUTC which were higher than the heterosis value for other traits in both crosses Inbreeding in IUTKH IUTC cross caused decreasing of 21 9 and 38 in grain yield and heads per plant respectively however the number of days to 50 emergence increased as 44 44 in this cross In the cross of Saffire IUTE heterosis value over the better parent for grain yield per plant seed per plant and 100 seed weight was 0 13 0 28 and 0 13 respectively and inbreeding caused decreasing 25 in grain yield per plant and 16 in seeds per head It seems that high heterosis value for grain yield per plant in the cross of IUTKH IUTC can be due to the high heterosis for the number of heads per plant The noticeable heterosis over better parent 14 49 for grain yield in cross IUTKH IUTC implying that the production of hybrid cultivars in safflower can increase the grain yield
