Abstract Nowadays the development of the human societies necessitates the reclamation of lands for theconstruction of airports buildings etc even on marshy lands For construction of structures on softsoils stabilization is necessary to avoid of unusual settlements and improve the soil strength One ofthe suitable methods for the improvement of soft soils is using geotextiles Using geotextiles withdrainage and reinforcement capabilities the rate of soil consolidation may be speed up and the soilbearing capacity improved In this research study the effects of a combined geotextile and fiberreinforcement of a very soft clayey soil on speeding up its consolidation process and improvingbearing capacity were considered The effect of parameters such as the number of the reinforcements ina certain area different reinforcement arrangements the length of reinforcements in a givenarrangement and also the direction of reinforcements in a certain arrangement and length on theconsolidation process and bearing capacity of the selected soil were investigated The requiredexperiments were performed in three steps In the primary step a number of one dimensional standardconsolidation tests was conducted to select a suitable soil for this laboratory study In the second step several tests were carried out in a relatively large scale in order to consider the effects of thereinforcements in different arrangements directions and lengths on the soil consolidation and bearingcapacity And finally in the third step a number of complementary experiments similar to previousstep expect for making some modifications in the reinforcements were carried out The results of theconducted tests showed that the consolidation time decreases with increasing the number of thereinforcements in all considered arrangements However the rate of decrease of consolidation time inarrangements with 9 and 13 reinforcements was slowed down and approached to a nearly limit state The tests results showed that the bearing capacity increases with increasing the number ofreinforcements from 4 to 6 The bearing capacity however showed to decrease as the number ofreinforcements increased to 9 and more Changing the reinforcement directions from vertical towardsbeneath the reinforcing area the consolidation time increased Conversely changing the reinforcementsdirections towards outside of reinforcing area the consolidation time decreases Also every deviationof reinforcements from vertical direction till 45 angle either into the beneath of reinforcing area oroutside of it caused a decrease in the bearing capacity Also it was observed that consolidation timedecreases with increasing the length of reinforcements In the complementary experiments thereinforcements were modified with applying a certain pretension on the geotextile to function in astiffened state and it was glued to the fiber core on the sewn points Results of the complementary testsshowed that the consolidation time decreases with increasing the number of reinforcements similar tothe initial reinforcements expect for with more rapid rate of consolidation Furthermore the obtainedresults showed that using modified reinforcements the soil bearing capacity improvement was morepronounced relative to that of initial reinforcements Also with modified reinforcement the bearingcapacity increased with increasing the length of reinforcement although the increasing effect waslimited in the reinforcement lengths more than the width of footing model
