228AbstractDue to the fact that the rail transportation industry is advantageous it has been introducedas a dynamic and improvable industry The train wheel is one of the componentsrecognized in improvement of the rail transportation The two subjects that have beenusually mentioned in research about the train wheel are the plate profile and tread profileof the wheel 36 in wheels are used in freight cars and locomotives An investigation of the stress levelproduced in 36 in wheels during different services operation including the effects of wear is presented in this paper In particular the stress fields were determined for one wear two wear and multiple wear wheels1 Stress fields were generated for the new returned and worn tread profiles for the one wear wheels Also stress fields were determined forthe new tread profiles for the two wear and multiple wear wheels From the analysis itwas concluded that decreasing the rim thickness of 36 in wheels increases the state ofstress in locations critical to the formation of shattered rims plate cracks and back rimcracks 1 Two wear and multiple wear wheels may be trued reprofiled several times during their life until the rimthickness is reduced to the condemning limit But in one wear wheel its reprofiling and condemning limitsare approximately equal one wear wheel rim thickness 3 81cm two wear wheel rim thickness 5 08cm multiple wear wheel rim thickness 6 35cm
