AbstractThe purpose of this thesis is to prepare a computer program for flows in micro devisesusing lattice Boltzmann method LBM We examine different boundary conditionsincluding the diffuse scattering combination of bounce back and specular boundaryconditions and study slip condition on the solid surfaces We also investigate theKnudsen minimum phenomena using LBM and finally the flow in porous media withmicro scale is simulated using LBM To achieve the above mentioned goal a computer program was prepared Thisprogram uses LBM and is able to simulate flow with different geometries anddimensions including flows in continuum regime slip regime and to some extendtransition regime We employed four different methods are diffuse scattering specular bounce back and combination this last two methods for boundary conditionon the solid surfaces Also to calculate the relaxation time two different methodswere used which includes defining of relaxation time in terms of Knudsen numberand in terms of local density as well as Knudsen number In order to examine and validate the computer code we first simulate some cases forproblem with macro dimension They include flows in cavity with different Reynoldsnumbers flows between two parallel plates driven by pressure and Couette flows Theresults were compared with the results obtained by Navier Stocks equations Thisstudy showed that results using present method are highly accurate Then LBM isused to simulate flows in micro geometries includes micro channel micro cavities andmicro Couette flows The results obtained for different Knudsen numbers andapplication of diffuse scattering boundary condition and defining of relaxation time interms of Knudsen number It was shown for the first time that LBM is able to obtainthe minimum Knudsen phenomena Finally a method based on LBM is introduced inwhich relaxation time is defined in terms of local density and Knudsen number andcombination of bounce back and specular boundary conditions is applied on the solidsurfaces This method was applied to simulate flow in micro channel Since themethod is able to simulate flows with different length scales it was used to simulateflow in porous channel with micro dimension and with different porosity Theaccuracy of results was investigated by calculating the pressure drop along the porouschannel
