Abstract In this work a new detector based on negative corona discharge was designedand constructed This detector can be used separately or as a detector in gaschromatography The variables of the detector such as the cell dimensions temperature of the cell gas flowrates and voltage between the two electrodeswere optimized In addition the chromatographic variables were optimized toobtain sharp and separate peaks Chloroform as a test compound was used toevaluate the performance of the detector The detection limit of chloroform wasobtained 0 78 ng mL and it s dynamic range was almost 3 5 order of magnitude
