138Abstract The reproduction of a woven fabric requires the recognition of its pattern repeat sothat the correct drawing in shed formation and weft insertion can be carried out Thisguarantees the correct reproduction of the original pattern Conventionally woven fabric pattern repeat is identified by extracting the individual warpor weft yarns from the fabric and determining whether warp is crossing weft or vice versaat each crossing point and subsequently marking or not marking a point paper for a warpcrossing weft or a weft crossing warp accordingly until usually at least two repeats in bothwarp and weft directions are obtained Then the repeat is manually identified This processis troublesome and time consuming especially for dense fabrics Therefore automaticmethods capable of identifying woven fabric pattern repeat can be very useful In this project using a new algorithm and image processing techniques a universal andalmost automatic method capable of identifying woven fabric pattern repeat is provided The method functions as follows First the original woven fabric is scanned and the obtained image is transferred to agray scale In the next stage using morphological operations the gray scale image isenhanced and subsequently filtered by steerable vertical filter emphasizing on verticallines i e warp borders compared to other directions Then the filtered image issegmented into blocks showing either a warp or a weft point according to the number ofwarps and wefts in the image in other words the total number of cross over points comes next followed by operating sum over the columns of the chosen sections andmaking a matrix from them Considering the equal amount of variation of these sections the variation of one of the sections is plotted against number of pixels through which aprimary threshold must be defined For some real samples applying a non linear diffusionfilter to the plot may make the task of primary threshold identification more exact Usingthe primary threshold divides all the pixels into two groups i e 1 or 0 depending on beingplaced in a warp or weft point In each block an average of values contained in iscalculated and compared with a secondary threshold This leads to the formation of theweave pattern showing the warp over weft crossing points as black squares and vice versa The secondary threshold was obtained by trial and error In order to identify the weaverepeat the obtained weave pattern was transformed into a matrix in which 0 and 1replaced the black and blank squares of the weave pattern Then the rows in this matrix areextracted and put in another matrix until the first raw is repeated The same procedure isrepeated for the columns of the new matrix and after recognition of the first repeatingcolumn the process is stopped and the repeat is produced It must be pointed out that forsome irregular repeats that may contain two or more warps or wefts with the samemovement i e the same pattern the process of repeat identification will be different Attention is drawn to the fact that the method offered in this project is universal and hasbeen tested successfully on several fabrics of various types of basic weave repeats
