AbstractThis study was conducted at Research Farm of Isfahan University of Technology todetermine relationship between traits and evaluate stress tolerance and susceptibilityindices of different barley lines using a split plot design with three replications innitrogen stress and non stress conditions Main plot consisted of non stress using 50kg ha net nitrogen before the beginning of vegetative growth and 100 Kg ha net nitrogenat primary stage of vegetative growth stem enlargement and grain filling and nitrogenstress using 50 kg ha net nitrogen before the beginning of vegetative growth conditions Sub plots were 49 recombinant inbred lines derived from the cross of Azummugi AZ and Kanto Nakate Gold KNG and the parents The result indicated that there wasenough genetic variation for all traits in stress and non stress conditions except 1000 grain weight Nitrogen stress decreased all the traits except flag leaf width peduncleweight ratio of peduncle weight to length 1000 grain weight number of grain spike grain weight per spike and harvest index The interaction effect of genotype and nitrogenwas considerable for all the traits except days to heading test weight and 1000 grainweight Grain yield had significant positive phenotypic and genetic correlation withbiological yield and harvest index Results of path analysis showed that harvest index hadhigh positive direct effect on grain yield in both stress and non stress conditions Factoranalysis detected 6 factors which explained 78 and 79 32 of the total variation instress and non stress conditions respectively Four factors were important Flag leaflength spike length awn length and peduncle length had higher loads on the first factorin non stress condition Spike weight number of grain spike and weight of grain spikewere more correlated with the second factor The third factor was correlated with days toheading and number of spike m 2 The fourth factor was related to peduncle weight Inthe stress condition the first factor was under the influence of plant height flag leaflength spike length awn length and peduncle length The second factor was related grainyield test weight biological yield and harvest index Spike weight number ofgrain spike and grain weight spike had larger loads on the third factor The fourth factorwas related to days to heading and number of spike m 2 Cluster analysis showed that thefirst cluster of line in non stress condition had more grain yield spike weight awn length number of grain spike and peduncle weight The genotypes in the second cluster in stresscondition had more biological yield plant height test weight flag leaf weight spikelength awn length and peduncle weight Among the stress tolerance indices TOL MP SSI GMP and STI STI and GMP were the better indices to distinguish the most tolerantline to nitrogen stress Smith Hazel and Pesk Baker indices based on day to heading number of spike m 2 number of grain spike 1000 grain weight and harvest indexintroduced line 30 as the best line and days to heading and 1000 grain weight as theimportant traits to be included in the indices in both stress and non stress conditions
