Abstract The long term voltage instability in a power system is prevented by employing the coordinatedcorrective and emergency controls The aim of emergency control is to establish a post disturbanceacceptable steady state operating point and to reduce overall voltage deviations of weak area busesand the weak transmission lines transient currents while minimum load shedding is achieved Inthis thesis a coordinated emergency control based on the prediction of the system trajectories afterdisturbance occurrence is proposed by defining an objective function Optimal predictive control isdesigned by minimizing an objective function during the interval from disturbance occurrenceinstant to the system settling point including load shedding and instability indices In this scheme some corrective and emergency control actions like setting the reference voltage of generators andLTCs connecting shunt capacitors to system buses and load shedding as a final solution are used Defined optimization problem containing discrete variables is solved by Tabu Search algorithm asa heuristical method To reduce the computations and invoke the possibility of the real timeapplication of this method trajectory sensitivity analysis is used to predict system state trajectoriesfor different kinds of controls instead of using the perfect model simulations To obtain theaccuracy of the results a combined algorithm consisted of trajectory sensitivity method and precisemodel analysis is proposed
