Abstract Low carbon 414 MM S martensitic steel is remarkable for it s high strength highresistance to brittle failure and good weldability Because of these characteristics is on themost popular alloys for cladding continuous caster rolls These properties can be obtainedwhen an intercritical tempering is applies as post weld heat treatment PWHT In thepresent research multiple pass weld of 414 MM S steel were overlaid on 13CrMo44 basemetal by Sub merged arc welding Some of the welds were subjected to single and doublestep post weld tempering treatment Effect of Ferrite on impact properties has beenstudied by complete heat treatment cycle includes of solution anneal at 950 C with doubletempering treatment Optical and scanning electron microscope SEM were used to studymicro structure and the hardness of weld layer were measured by Rockwell C and VickersMethods To recognize the effect of the austenite content on impact toughness sampleshave been applied and evaluated through Charpy test Toughening mechanism of theaustenite layer were recognized by X ray diffraction The studies have shown whenincrease austenite content of the weld metal adds with decrease volumetric fraction of Ferrite the maximum improve in toughening properties will be reached The tougheningmechanism of austenite lath like morphology is associated with transformation inducedplasticity TRIP
