AbstractIn this research work corrosion behavior of carbon steel type of A516 Gr60 inDiethanolamine DEA and Diglycolamine DGA solutions was investigated Thesesolutions are used for removing H2S from sour gas in refineries The main object was toinvestigate the corrosion behvior charactristic and mechanism of carbon steel in thesesolutions and thus assessing the possibility of replacing DEA with DGA DEA and DGAwere added into sour water solution Also Rich DGA and Lean DGA from operational units inrefinery were investigated in order to evaluate the industrial conditions Results obtainedshowed that increasing the amine concentration and temperature increases the corrosion rateand decreases the passive stability region The passive film was formed in DEA solutions wastrolite FeS and in DGA was mackinawite FeS1 x EIS measurements revealed thatcorrosion process in DGA and DEA that was prepared using sour water is charge transfercontrol and diffusion control respectively Decreasing of Warburg coefficient s withincreasing of concentration in DEA solutions was due to sulfide film compaction loss andincreasing of film solubility In DGA solutions modeling of impedance spectra withequivalent circuits containing CPE element showed very good fitting Increasing the amineconcentration increased capacitance and decreased n CPE exponent due to thinning ofsulfide film and decreasing the film uniformity In DGA and DEA that was prepared withsour water and in Lean DGA solutions no pitting corrosion was detected While in Rich DGAsolutions pitting corrosion was occurred in all conditions Also the Epit and Eprot decreasedwith incresing the temperature The overall comparison on corrosion behavior in the sameconditions showed that corrosivity of DEA was less than DGA solution
