Abstract Poly vinyl chloride is one of the oldest polymers and second largest in volumethermoplastic manufactured in the world Large amount of this polymer ismanufactured by suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer Reactoreffluent has a large content of residual monomer in polymer Researches have beenshown that vinyl chloride exposures to atmosphere from polymer resin is acarcinogenic agent The monomer content of polymer should be improved toenvironmental standards This work aimed the modeling and simulation of BandarImam Petrochemical Company s BIPC degassing column In this column inlet slurryis degassed with counter current contact with steam The laws of conservation of massand energy and also phase equilibrium equation as governing equations were solvedusing MATLAB Flory Huggins model and Virial equation of state are used forthermodynamic behavior of monomer in slurry and vapor phase Hydrodynamicsimulation is performed in order to predict the pressure drop Results are in goodagreement with design data Also the effects of operating variables such as inlet slurryand inlet vapor flow rates column top pressure are shown With respect to flooding increasing inlet vapor by 20 and decreasing column top pressure to 0 9 bar causedecreasing in monomer content of outlet slurry up to 33 and 18
