ABSTRACTFlextural vibrations and determining critical speeds of rotors are of important issues invibration engineering In this study rotor and its components are modeled and a computerprogram is used to study the vibration characteristics of rotors This program is able todetermine critical speeds of rotors by using Finite Elements Method FEM By using this computer program effects of several factors such as gyroscopic effects shearand rotary inertia effect and etc on natural frequencies and critical speeds considered One form of damage that can lead to catastrophic failure if undetected is fatigue cracks inthe shaft In this study a transvers open crack is modeled by a 4 4 flexibility matrix and itseffects on vibration characteristics of a rotor system is considered Also a rotor system forflextural vibrations has been considered by including two transvers open cracks have beencarried out and the infuence of one crack over the other for eigenfrequencies and modeshapes has been observed Generally the theory of open crack for industrial rotors is not valid So in this study thebreathing model for crack is added into computer code and the results of this asumption iscompaired with open crack
