AbstractGrazing lands represent the largest land resource in the world and therefore are importantfrom economic and environmental perspectives Mountainous landforms in central Zagrosare mainly used as pasture and are heavily degraded due to overgrazing There is nodetailed information on the impact of such practices on soil C stocks soil properties andquality The objective of this study was to assess the effect of climate vegetation type andlong term grazing exclusion on soil classification C and N storage soil properties and alsosoil C quality Fourteen experimental range sites protected against grazing as well as theiradjacent overgrazed sites in Chadegan Pishkuh and Poshtkuh were selected In each grazedand grazing exclusion plots samples were collected from genetic horizons of soil profilesand physico chemical properties were measured in soil samples In each site samples werealso collected from depths 0 5 and 5 15 cm Soil organic C soluble organic C particulateorganic matter C POM C microbial biomass C total nitrogen particulate organic matter nitrogen POM N dehydrogenase activity water stable aggregates organic C to total Nratio POM C to POM N ratio microbial biomass C to organic C ratio and metabolicquotient were measured and or calculated The CO2 concentration released during a 29 dayincubation of soil POM and silt plus clay fractions were measured Inceptisols are the most widely occurring soils in studied regions and Mollisols is onlyobserved in protected plots of Pishkuh and Poshtkuh regions with higher precipitation andhigher plant production Although grazed soils in these regions have enough organic carbonto fulfill the criteria of Mollic epipedon but they are not qualified for Mollic epipedon dueto lack of color and thickness criteria of this epipedon Pishkuh and Chadegan regions havethe highest and lowest C and N stocks respectively Long term grazing exclusion caused anincrease in C and N storage in soils but grazed soils had the highest amount of inorganic Cdue to soil surface erosion and the exposure of highly calcareous subsoil Comparison ofprotected and grazed plots showed that the rate of organic C increase due to long termexclusion in Chadegan Pishkuh and Poshtkuh regions are 0 3 to 1 and 1 to 2 5 Mg ha 1 y 1for 0 30 cm and 0 100 cm respectively The highest biochemical biological and aggregatesdegradation occurred in Chadegan region due to low fresh materials input and a dryerclimate The above parameters in Pishkuh and Poshtkuh regions are 2 5 to 3 times greaterthan those in Chadegan area Pishkuh and Poshtkuh regions have the higher plantproduction soil organic C and consequently higher microbial activity due to their morehumid climate Grazing intensity in Pishkuh is less than that in Poshtkuh region and that ispossibly the reason why no significant difference between grazed and protected sites inPishkuh was found There is more labile C for microbial activity and better quality oforganic matter in Poshtkuh and Pishkuh regions Soil organic C was identified by factoranalysis as the most sensitive indicator of soil quality in studied regions Factor analysis andsoil quality indices suggested the highest and lowest soil quality for protected plots ofPoshtkuh and both grazed and protected plots of Chadegan regions respectively Inconclusion highly degraded rangelands in Pishkuh and Poshtkuh seem to be able to recoververy quickly with proper management while Chadegan region needs a much longer periodto restore
