Abstract A sediment particle enters motion as soon as the resultant hydrodynamics forcesapplied on the particle exceed the it s weight In this condition the particle motion starts tooccur and is transported in the form of bed load and suspended load Bed materialsmeasurement is of great economic importance to predict the risks of sediment transportwhich has been started in Iran from 1962 However it must be mentioned there are fewstudies on the bed load motion of coarse bed rivers even in hydraulic projects In thisresearch Langan source down stream of Zayanderood was investigated in three reaches Also flow velocities bed load motion grain size measurements carried out and then thebed shear stress the shields parameter were determined using the parabolic approach remarkable difference among d50 along the river makes considerable influence on theshields parameter and critical value of this parameter It seems there is no an universalshield parameter even for a cross section Consequently each section is characterized byunique value which depends on morphological and hydraulic conditions Among theselected equations to predict the bed load motion Wilcock s equation indicate morecompatibility with the measured data in this study Finally the comparison of the waterorganization data with ours shows that a statistical equation in power form between flowdischarge and sediment discharge can be suitable In this regard two to three percent of thepredicted value of the above equation presents the bed load motion in Langan source
