Abstract A reduction in the amount of billet used in mechanized planting of sugarcane fromthe costs reduction prospecting is very important This can be achieved by improving themetering system on billet planters Several works presented by various researchers werereviewed and finally best plan selected for design development and evaluation Theprototype was consisted of an endless chain conveyor with cupboards holding andconveying the billets to the surface of the planting furrows The mechanism used toexclude extra billets was effective and at the same time simple in design andconstruction Chain conveyor system enabled the timing of the billet travel to providedesired planting with overlap on without it Mechanical Desktop software was used fortechnical modeling and drawing of plans The fabricated prototype was evaluated on alaboratory test rig An electric motor and reduction gearbox was used to supply the speedof the test rig conveying belt The speed of metering system chain and test rig belt wascontrolled by an inverter The metering system was evaluated based on the percent fillingof the cupboards over overlapping and under overlapping as effected by planting speed 2 59 3 3 5 4 km h cane vary with and without debrie and angle of the chainconveyor structure from vertical line 10 15 20 degree with three replications Afactorial experiment in a completely randomized design was used to determine effect ofspeed of planting and angle of the chain conveyor on percent filling of cupboards over overlap and under overlap indexes Data obtained from experiments were analyzed usingSAS and MSATAT C statistical softwares Results indicated that effect of the angle ofchain conveyor according to vertical line speed of planting and the interaction of allthese independent variables on the percent filling of cupboards were significantlydifferent An increase in planting speed and angle of the chain conveyor decreased thepercent filling of cupboards No significant difference was observed for over overlappingas a result of the experimental factors Selection of the type of power train which omitsslippage effect of the conveying belt may contribute to the results obtained for over overlapping Effect of the angle of chain conveyor and the interaction of the cane varyand speed of planting on under overlapping was observed to be significantly different For the best working condition a planting speed of 4 km h and with cane variety withoutdebire and planting speed of 3 5 km h with cane variety with debire give the best resultsas for as planting quality indices on concedes
