Abstract Bioavailability and mobility of heavy metals HMs in soils are determined bytheir partitioning between solution and solid phase and their further redistributionamong solid phase components Some properties of soil such as salinity and organicmatter content and redox condition affect heavy metals distribution among soil fractionsand theirs availability to plants A study was undertaken to determine the effects ofsalinity alfalfa powder AP on cadmium Cd and lead Pb distribution among soilfractions Three unpolluted agricultural soils were treated with 20 mg Cd kg and 150mg Pb kg 50 mmol kg of NaCl and 2 of AP and 2 polluted soils were treated with50 mmol kg of NaCl and 2 of AP The soils were then incubated at 60 waterholding capacity WHC and saturation 1 2 5 soil water suspension for 12 weeks atconstant temperature 25oC Various fractions of Cd and Pb were extracted from thesubsamples after 1 and 12 weeks of incubation using a sequential extraction techniqueand electrical conductivity EC pH dissolved organic carbon DOC andconcentrations of cations and anions were determined in the 1 2 5 soil water extract andavailable Cd and Pb determined in 0 05 M EDTA extract after 1 3 6 and 12 weeks ofincubation Concentrations of organic and inorganic species of Cd and Pb in soilsolution were also predicted using Visual Minteq speciation program The results in60 WHC showed that applied Pb was mainly found in the specifically sorbed SS andamorphous Fe oxides AFeO fractions and applied Cd was mainly found in SS and Mnoxides MnO fractions Applied Pb and Cd increased the soluble Pb and Cd in the acidsoil and to some extent in the neutral soil but not in calcareous soil The most prevalentspecies of dissolved Pb and Cd in the soils were Pb DOC and Cd2 species respectively At the end of incubation time addition of 2 AP decreased theexchangeable EXC Pb in the neutral and calcareous soils and EDTA extractable Pb inthe acid and calcareous soils whereas it increased soluble Pb almost in all soils Thistreatment had no significant effect on the EDTA extractable Cd and its effect on theEXC Cd was different depending on soil pH AP treatment also increased soluble Cdsignificantly in all soils Addition of NaCl increased the soluble and exchangeable Cd inall soils and EDTA extractable Cd in the acid soil at the end of incubation time Thistreatment had also significant effect on the EXC fraction only in the acid soil andEDTA extractable Pb in all soils Total concentration of Cd in two contaminated soilswere 65 and 142 mg kg and those of Pb were 2490 and 9086 mg kg Over 70 of Cdand 55 of Pb were distributed in SS and FeO fractions The results in waterloggedcondition showed that the treatments decreased redox potential of the soils especially inthe neutral soil and AP application enhanced redox potential decrease Cadmium and Pbwere mainly associated with specifically sorbed SS and Fe oxides FeO fractions respectively In the acid and calcareous soils application of AP increased Cd in the FeOfraction markedly and that of Pb in the SS fraction It however had no effect on Cd andPb fractions in the neutral soil In the contaminated soil the concentration of soluble Cdincreased by NaCl application and decreased by AP application
