Abstract Pinch Rolls or Rubber Covered Rolls comprise an entire family of non reducing rollsthat are used to redirect the travel of a strip mill product and to provide strip tension for adownstream process Pinch Rolls are used in nearly all metallic strip production industriesincluding steel aluminum brass and bronze The aim of this research is to evaluate the PinchRolls performance used in Mobarakeh Steel Complex and to find reasons of soon failure intheir covers after one third on its nominal life time At the first step with the aid of some experiments material parameters in constitutiveequations have been found Then on the basis of finite element simulations stress and forceanalysis in the rubber covers was accomplished Comparing the simulation result with similarexperimental results in previous studies the numerical procedure has been verified bytheorical and experimental efforts Finally by two and three dimensional simulations of crackin rubber and using fatigue crack growth characteristics in rubber a series of judgments aboutroll cover service life have been made considering the initial flaws
