AbstractCold rolled sheet just after rolling process contains special defects and it can not besuitable for accurate industries such as automotive or aircraft manufactories Since one ofthe most important consumers of Steel Complexes are automotive industries producingsheet with suitable mechanical properties and minimum shape defects seems inevitable This can be achieved by using corrective lines after cold roll mill One of the mostimportant systems in corrective lines is Tension Leveling apparatus These kinds ofleveling system are used widely in Mobarakeh Steel Complex In the present study sometypes of shape defects and leveling systems are introduced One of the most important stages in investigating of leveling systems is determining theshape defects of sheets entered to the leveling system One of these defects is Coil set thatis one of the most usual one Coiling and uncoiling is the most important factor inproducing this defect This process is originally pure bending and unbending Experimentalmeasurements show that residual stress distribution through thickness is relativelycomplicated Considering limitation of the experimental method extracting an analyticalsolution for determination of stress distribution seems reasonable and beneficial Thisstudy presents a closed form solution for residual stresses in which bending and unbendingprocess is modeled as an elastic plastic plane strain problem An anisotropic material wasassumed The useful aspect of this model is having explicit form regarding to the existingparameters so it can be easily used to predict the residual stress distribution which enteredto the leveler and it is also applicable for analyzing coiling uncoiling leveling straightening and elimination of shape defects processes Strip elongation can be analytically determined by using tensile stress and strip curvature Also elimination of coil set and gutter depends on applying optimum curvature Since stripradius curvature is not necessarily equal to the roller radius one of the most importantgoals of this project is determination of effective radius of curvature on the system rollers In this study regarding to the effectiveness of Finite element methods in simulation of theprocess different configurations are modeled and actual strip radius of curvature isobtained based on different influencing parameters The results show that wrapping angleof the strip obtained by FEM is far different form geometrical one but FEM results are in agood agreement with the available experimental tests which shows the reliability of FEM In the next stage the effect of each parameter on strip radius of curvature is investigatedand a relatively accurate formula which presents actual strip radius of curvature based onother parameters is presented Finally considering the actual strip curvature and otherparameters effect of them on wave elimination mechanism in the process is evaluated andthe suitable amount of them and optimum condition of the leveling system is obtained
