Abstract The texture of the coatings obtained from a zinc cobalt acidic sulfate bath and itsdependence on processing parameters were investigated Electrodeposition was carried outgalvanostaticly at different current densities and temperatures Electrochimical testsinvolving cathodic polarization cyclic voltametery and AC impedance spectroscopy wereused to determine the electrodeposition mechanism The coating texture was evaluated byODF oriented distributed function and In Sheet plane texture coefficient measurements A prism texture component containing 11 0 01 6 planes was formed onelectropolished steel surface the orientation of which were perpendicular to the substrate This texture component was developed due to field oriented texture growth Uponincreasing deposition overpotential 00 2 basal fiber texture component was promoted This fiber texture component led to platelet morphology in the coating Further increasingdeposition overpotential promoted the formation of separated colonies containing ofpyramidal 11 5 low angle texture component onto 00 2 basal fiber texture component The zinc cobalt texture on mechanically polished surface of steel at low overpotential wasrandom and at higher overpotential was 00 2 basal fiber texture with lower intensitiescompared to the electropolished surface The texture component onto as received surfaceswas always random The random texture component was promoted by the increases intemperature of the bath on the electropolished mechanically polished and as receivedsurfaces According to this study the corrosion resistance of different texture componentswas as follows basal texture basal texture pyramidal texture prism texture randomtexture Current densities temperature quality of substrate preparation and cobalt or cobaltrich species adsorption inhibitory effect were parameters that effected texture andmorphology of zinc cobalt coatings
