AbstractEstablishment of severe environmental roles by governments and economicalconsideration have caused a great attention toward removal of pollutants fromindustrial wastes to prevent them from entering the environment Dyes are amongthese pollutants which are widely used by textile and carpet industries Differentmethods such adsorption by different adsorbents are used to eliminate these pollutingagents from wastes In the present work the feasibility of using a special form of graphite known asexfoliated graphite EG for removal of dyes by adsorption process was investigatedexperimentally For this purpose elimination of three different kinds of dyes fromsynthetic colored solution was studied Four main effecting parameters weredetermined to study their effects on the adsorption ability of EG for the purpose ofthis work The two parameters of nitric acid sulfuric acid ratio and temperature ofhigh temperature heat treatment were related to the synthesis process of adsorbentwhereas concentration of dyes in the solution and adsorbent to solution ratio wereother factors related to adsorption stage To decrease the number of required experiments and determining the contribution ofeach factor the Taguchi method was used for design of the experiments By using thismethod and application of orthogonal array L16 optimum condition for eliminatingeach dye was predicted which these conditions were approved by doing confirmationexperiments According to the obtained results EG is able to completely eliminateeach dye at its optimum condition Also desorption experiments proved that the usedadsorbent can be recovered partially and reused
