AbstractWater scarcity and soil salinity are two important limitations for agricultural productionin arid regions and Yazd province with regard to its desert condition encounters thisproblem seriously Since large portions of renewable water resources are used foragriculture in Iran and irrigation efficiency is also low selection and application of anystrategy for optimization of water application is important In recent years one of thestrategies for crop production with maximum income under water scarcity conditions isdeficit irrigation One method of deficit irrigation called Partial Rootzone Drying PRD is a new irrigation technique that improves water use efficiency whileminimizing adverse effects on yield Canola crop with high oil content in its seeds 40 45 precent pure oil and resistance to soil salinity and different climatic conditions of Iran has great ability for satisfying the main part of country s requirements for edibleoil This research was carried out on winter canola Brassica napus L cv Zarfam under greenhouse at Agriculture and Natural Resources Research Center of Yazd in2006 The experiment was performed as a complete randomized block design with threereplications that contained salinity and irrigation water factors Salinity factor had fourlevels of S1 3 4 S2 6 7 S3 9 10 and S4 12 13 dS m and irrigation water factor hadthree levels of W1 30 W2 50 and W3 80 percent of management allowed depletion Soil texture was loamy sand PRD experiment was performed in five treatments T1 irrigation at right and left sides of pots T2 alternating irrigation T3 irrigation only atright side T4 irrigation only at right side without central plate and T5 alternatingirrigation without central plate with irrigation water salinity of 6 56 dS m and irrigationrate of 50 MAD with three replications and in box containers which had a very thinplate in their center The results showed that under simultaneous salinity and defficitirrigation increasing salinity to S3 level increased significantly the canola dry matter by14 64 and increasing salinity to S4 level decreased the plant dry matter production by10 95 The results of PRD treatments showed that grain yield decreased from 18 11g plant in control to 16 38 g plant in T2 treatment but this reduction was not statisticallysignificant Water use efficiency of control was 0 376 and that of T2 treatment was0 673 kg m3 and their difference was significant at 1 probability level PRD did nothave significant effect on pod length With 50 reduction in irrigation water no ofpods decreased from 69 7 to 53 23 19 In general PRD increased no of plants potby 9 6 plant height by 31 94 the distance of the first pod from the soil surface by13 14 1000 seed weight by 15 12 and plant dry matter by 0 8 but decreased no of lateral branches by 18 03 no of seeds per pod by 1 48 and harvest index by0 09 Under PRD amount of P K Mg Na Cl Cu Zn and Fe concenteration wasincreased but Mn and Ca concenteration decreased in the canola
