Incorporating RS GIS Techniques and Frequency Analysis Models for Flood Inundation Study at JIROFT Vicinity Ali Sarhadi asarhadi@na iut ac ir Date of Submission February 19 2008 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Assist Prof Saeed Soltani ssoltani@cc iut ac irSupervisor Assoc Prof Seyed Jamaladin Khajeddin khajedin@ cc iut ac irCollege Graduate Program Coordinator Assist Prof N Mirghafari Assist Prof College of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Assoc Prof College of Natural Resources Isfahan University of TechnologyAbstractIn this study Jiroft city and its vicinity were found as a vulnerable point to flood risk due toits geomorphic location at the junction of two important rivers of Halilrud basin and selectedin order to study the flood hazard In this study 13 hydrometery stations in the basin wereselected and regional flood frequency was applied based on L moments after homogenizationtest using H and D statistics The HEC GEO RAS and HEC GEO HMS were applied toderive the watershed boundary of each station and other hydro geomorphic climatic andphysical parameters of the watersheds The 2002 ETM satellite image was also used toextract land use as a hydrologic parameter Multi linear regression MLR was then appliedto link flood quantiles to watershed parameters The flood quantiles at each reach were usedas input data for hydraulic simulation of HEC RAS and floodplain map for each return periodwere provided using post processes of HEC GEO RAS The IRS 1D satellite image was thenused to identify areas with high economic values based on image processing andenhancement which show different land use areas such as urban agriculture and horticulture green spaces and roads influenced by flooding Thus future management should considerfloodplain boundaries and flood inundation areas especially for urban vicinities Keywords Flood risk Flood frequency floodplain HEC HMS Jiroft
