ABSTRACTIn order to study the karyotype and meiotic behavior of Iranian Triticum boeoticumaccessions and also to determine the relationships between geographical distribution ofmorphological traits and karyotype characteristics an experiment was conducted atCytogenetic Laboratory and Research Farm of the Collage of Agriculture of TehranUniversity The accessions were grown in the field and different characters such as leaf andnode hairiness node size own type days to shooting heading and maturity spikelength own length upper internode length peduncle length plant height flag leaf length andwidth number of spike glum length and seed length and width were recorded or measured The results indicated high variation among accessions for morphological traits Clusteranalysis based on metric and binary characters divided the accessions into two groups Themajority of accessions in the first group including accessions belonged to coolgeographic regions and majority of them in the second group including accessions wereoriginated from chilly regions No chromosomal aberrations were found in meiosis stage ofyoung spiks and chromosomes paired in circular bivalent at metaphase Karyotyp studiesshowed that the longest chromatin length was belonged to Ardabil accessions m while an accession with unknown origin had the shortest m chromatin The range ofchromosome length in Tritium boeoticum accessions was m The accessions had types of chromosomes M and m and categorizing in different karyotypic classes TheArdabil accession with the least difference of range of relative length of chromosomes had the most symmetric karyotype and an accession from Mahabad with the value of had the most asymmetric karyotype Also the ardabil accession with the highest symmetricindex and Ravansar accession with the lowest value had the most and leastsymmetric karyotypes respectively Romero Zarco s classification method showed thatArdabil accession with within chromosomal difference index of had the mostsymmetric karyotype and an accession with unknown origin had the most asymmetrickaryotype Based on Stebbins method of classification all the accessions were grouped insymmetric class of A Ag NOR banding identified one nucleolus organizer NOR onchromosome long arm Cluster analysis based on karyotypic traits revealed major clusterswith and accessions These groups were statistically different with respect to importantkaryotypic trait such as total chromosome length long and short arm lengths length of thelongest chromosome length of shortest chromosome haploid chromatin length andsymmetry index Dendrograms of claster analyses based on karyotypic and morphologicalcharacters showed the same grouping of accessions In general accessions of Tritiumboeoticum which were collected from chill region Aleshtar Ahar Piranshahr Sagaz Gharveh Uromieh and Ardabil had different morphological and karyotypical charactersfrom other accessions belonging to cool region
