Abstract Sewage sludge and compost application on farmlands as fertilizer are commonly practiced in many countries These materials are rich in macro and micro nutrients However high concentration of heavy metals in sludge and compost may cause pollution of soil ground water and human food chain because of toxic metal uptake by the crops The object of this study was to determine residual and cumulative effects of sewage sludge and compost on concentration of nutrient element and pollution and toxicity of these elements in soil and plant Different levels of 0 25 50 and 100 Mg ha 1 of sewage sludge and compost and were applied to the soil for five years To study the cumulative and residual effects of the sewage sludge and compost application were repeated on entire plots in the first year on four fifth of each plot in the second year on three fifth of each plot in third year on two fifth of plots in fourth year and in one fifth of plots in five year After the fifth year soil samples from the 0 20 cm depth of the different parts of the plots were taken and analyzed for the N P K Fe Cu Zn Cd and Pb elements concentrations The corn was also harvested and straw and grains were separately analyzed for the same elements Cumulative sewage sludge and compost application increased EC N P K and DTPA extractable concentration of the heavy metals and decreased soil pH significantly As the time passed although these factors continuosly decreased approaching that of the control level they were still significantly higher as compared to the control after the total studying period of five years Analyses of different plant tissues show that sewage sludge and compost increased concentration of nutrient elements significantly In 50 Mg ha 1 compost treatment with two and four applications Cu toxicity and in the all the sludge treatment Zn toxicity were observed in corn plant The results of this study show that application of sewage sludge and compost increased concentrations of different elements in soil and plant pdfMachine is a pdf writer that produces quality PDF files with ease Get yours now Thank you very much I can use Acrobat Distiller or the Acrobat PDFWriter but I consider your product a lot easier to use and much preferable to Adobe s A Sarras USA
