Abstract Nowedays core spun yarn which is composed of filament core with a staplefiber covering has a variety of applications The aim of using core spun yarns is totake advantages of the different properties of these two components However acommon problem with core spun yarns made on a ring spinning frame is the slippageof the staple fibers relative to the filament An effective method for resolving thisproblem was proposed as spreading mutifilament yarns into mono filaments by usingelectrostatic field In this research we describe a new method of producing composite yarn calledcluster spun yarn that is spun with cotton fibers and polyester multifilament spread byslotted roller Slotted roller with fine grooves divides the multifilament into two orthree even four substrands and produce clustered spun yarn the principles that wasused in manufacturing of solospun yarns For this purpose core spun and cluster spunyarns were produced at different twist levels and then these yarns and relevant fabricswere tested for a range of properties i e tenacity elongation evenness and abrationresistance of fabrics Structural characteristics of core and cluster spun yarns havebeen studied by SEM as well Microtomy method and image processing techniqueswere used to study the distribution of fibers in the cross section of sample yarns The results showed that cluster spun yarn with 3 9 twist factor and cluster spunfabrics with yarns of twist factor of 3 5 has the maximum breaking strength SEMphotos revealed that how diffrenet structure of cluster spun yarn and core spun yarnresulted to the different properties Spread width greatly affects the yarn properties aswell as its structure This is due to the fact that the polyester filaments and the cottonfibers blended evenly and firmly which lead to greater frictional force and cohesion Image processing results indicate that structure of cluster yarns in higher twist factoris similar to core spun yarns Both yarns and the fabrics produced by using yarns at5 2 twist factor had the best results for evenness and abration resistance
