Abstract During the previous century water in many areas of the world has become increasinglypolluted by LNAPLs Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquids These materials form a serious threatto our drinking water supplies To prevent health risks for humans and damage to nature thecontaminated waters should be remediated immediately These liquids are affected bygravitational and capillary forces moving downward and prediction of their behaviors is basedon these forces Gone down enough to reach water surface those will accumulate on the watersurface and move as a thin layer In the case of water level fluctuations the mobile LNAPLs canbe converted to residual LNAPLs Residual LNAPLs are liquid droplets that are entrapped insoil by capillary forces Regarding to considerable amount of capillary forces especially in finesoils the remediation of residual LNAPLs is very difficult and impossible in some cases Newtechniques are developed to clean up LNAPL contamination where the soil is not excavated toclean it up The most of them are based on pump of contaminated water In this research wehave almost done a complete review on technologies and finally chose one suitable for deepand permeable aquifers The technology used dual pump recovery is an advanced method forremediation of oil contaminants This method is based on using of two dynamic pumps one forwater and another for oil simultaneously In recent years researchers have been looking foroptimizing of this technology so that it is minimized to convert mobile LNAPLs to the residualLNAPLs In a formula developed recently using a linear relationship between oil and waterflow rate we can use the benefits of dual pump recovery without forming of residual LNAPLs To simulate of remediation process we need a simulator In this research we have usedUTCHEM 9 3 developed in Texas University at Austin as a comprehensive three dimensionalmodel that works based on finite difference method We have used only its main capabilitiessuch as diffusion advection and dispersion in this research and ignored adsorption biodegradation heat transfer surfactants and chemical reactions On the other hand because thefinal aim of this research is optimization of remediation process we have also chosen the classicform of GA as a suitable method for minimizing of objective function This algorithmminimizes the total costs of remediation by finding of the best place and flow rate for 3 wellsthrough 9 probable wells place and flow rate are limited to user defined values Central well well 5 is located on the mass center of contamination plume automatically by LROPTIMIZER and rest of wells are defined based on Advantages of GA are simplicity in useand programming and binary form of this algorithm is used in this research Finally we haveconsidered the aquifer adjacent the Isfahan Refinery company as a case study for optimizing theremediation process using LR OPTIMIZER Optimization results give us the best place andflow rates for active wells The algorithm used in this research can be improved by givensuggestions and will work faster in future
