Abstract Sejzi plain located in east of city of Isfahan is one of the arid plains under intensitivedesertification processes Limonium iranicum a native drought and salinity tolerant plant species indistributed sparsly but patchy in this desert Seed production of Limonium iranicum was studied inyear 2006 Germination and establishment as well as transplanting tolerance of seedling werestudied during late Feburary to June of 2007 Soil characteristics of three growing sites of thisspecies were evaluated Germination tests were carried out for 21 days in germinator with 30 Cand 12 hours light period Seedlings were planted in trays and after 90 days they were transplantedinto pots filled with soils of growing sites Seed weight was determined to be 0 284 gram for 1000seeds and each plant on the average produced 10 5 individual seeds Pregermination treatmentsshowed that cold treatment with 7 days at 0 5 C resulted in maximum germination Germinationrates and alometric index of pregermination treatments had no significant differences Nosignificant differences were detected among establishment percentages between late Feburary andlate March There was significant differences at 0 05 level between substrate effects on seedlingestablishment Sand and peat moss bed had highest result equal to 47 7 in late Feburary planting In late March planting lowest establishment 18 52 was observed on sand straw and peat mossbed Significant interactions 0 05 was observed between planting date and bed materials onseedling establishment Sand and peat moss bed had highest establishment percentage equal to43 6 while sand straw and peat moss bed resulted in lowest establishment equal to 24 1 percent All established seedlings after 90 days were transplanted to pots filled with soils from growing siteswith 100 percent success In soil characteristics studies amount of gypsum had inverse effect onnatural establishment of this species Increasing salinity from 37 8 ds m to 52 4 ds m caused dieingback of native plants On the other hand lime and clay seemed to have positive effects for standsituation in growing conditions of this area
