Abstract Agricultural products are harvested at moisture contents much higher thansafe range for storage them Therefore they are dried to prevent qualitydeterioration Drying is a bidirectional process in which heat transfer fromheating source to product surface and from surface into the product center andmoisture transfer from product internal parts to its surface and from surface tothe environment occurs On the other hand drying is an energy intensiveoperation Heat pump drying is one of the technologies that could play asignificant role in quality increasing and reducing energy consumption especially in drying of high value products that require controlled conditions ofdrying In this investigation a heat pump dryer with on line scaling ability toobtain drying kinetics was designed and built in order to evaluate heat pumpdrying effect on dried product quality and energy consumption in comparisonwith without heat pump dryer In this apparatus a centrifugal fan supplied theairflow required for drying and with a 3phase driver motor of 2hp andmaximum speed of 2800 rpm The air can reach to the desired temperature bypassing from an electrical heater with 6 elements and total heat capacity of4 2kW The drying chamber was selected of a Plexiglas tube with circle crosssection of 14 cm internal diameter In this dryer to control the dryer airtemperature a controller with ability of electrical current control was used Inthe heat pump system designed and fabricated a compressor with Hp anevaporator an expansion valve and two condensers were considered Isfahanrough rice was selected to conduct the experiments Drying tests wereperformed with heat pump dryer and conventional dryer The bed depth anddryer air velocity and temperature were 20 cm 1 m s and 35 respectively Fissured kernel percentage after drying with heat pump and conventionaldryers were measured 15 33 and 19 33 respectively Power consumptions ofheat pump dyer and dryer without heat pump were 772 and 925 23 W respectively 1387 2 15 1 # $ 2 # $ 3 0 #$ 4 1 23 5 8 9 4 5 4 67 $
