Abstract Bandwidth limitation and channel fading are two major problems in wireless communication systems In the late 90 s it was shown that the capacity of a fading channel is substantially increased by using multiple antennas in the transmitter and receiver Such communication systems are referred to as multiple input multiple output MIMO systems The gain in the capacity of a MIMO system can be attributed to the spacial diversity that such systems provide in coping with channel fading In order to approach the large theoretical capacity of a MIMO system it is necessary to perform a combined form of coding and modulation involving both the time domain and the space domain i e involving multiple input antennas of the system This type of combined coding and modulation is referred to as space time coding The most popular category of space time codes is the orthogonal space time block coding which has a rich algebraic structure These codes besides achieving the maximum possible diversity gain have a very simple symbol by symbol maximum likelihood decoding Another important aspect of the design of a MIMO communication system is channel estimation on which correct decoding of the input data heavily depends In a MIMO system channel estimation involves the estimation of the matrix of complex coefficients corresponding to each pair of input output antennas In the first part of this thesis chapters 1 3 after reviewing a MIMO communication system with space time codes we focus our attention on orthogonal block coding and analyze this important category of space time codes Although no new research finding is provided in this first part of the thesis with respect to orthogonal block codes our presentation is novel in that we provide a unified theoretical framework and a cohesive set of definitions in order to derive and express various existence results with respect to code designs in an integrated fashion Taking this approach we are able to avoid some of the unnecessary complexities that are involved in some other texts on the subject Our main research contribution in this thesis is presented in chapter 4 which is on channel estimation in MIMO systems In this chapter after a brief review of various approaches to channel estimation we focus on the blind channel estimation method proposed by Shahbazpanahi for use in MIMO systems with space time block codes Using analysis and a more rigorous development of the results as compared to the approach taken in Shahbazpanahi we are able to solve some of the problems left open there with respect to the dimension of the proposed channel estimation space and its dependence on the number of output antennas pdfMachine A pdf writer that produces quality PDF files with ease Produce quality PDF files in seconds and preserve the integrity of your original documents Compatible across nearly all Windows platforms if you can print from a windows application you can use pdfMachine Get yours now
