Abstract In order to determine the interaction between selected edaphic characteristics with growthparameters of Haloxylon persicum in the Choupanan region Naein ordination stepwise regression andPearson s correlation were employed The sampling method was stratified random sampling inwhich the studied areas were divided to 6 sites according to presence of saxaul as planted or natural cultivation year and Haloxylon persicum physiognomy as follow 1 natural strong saxaul 2 naturalweak saxaul 3 natural old saxaul 4 planted strong saxaul 5 planted weak saxaul 6 bareland rangeland Then the age of 6 samples of H persicum in saxaul sites 3 samples in natural oldsaxaul site was determined using two methods 1 The number of bifurcations and 2 The number ofannual growth rings Other vegetation parameters such as canopy cover area the primitive of canopycover smallest and biggest canopy cover diameter average of canopy cover diameter basal area anddiameter were measured too Vegetation parameters of 27 samples of H persicum with high variationin growth situation were studied totally In order to study the soil properties 3 soil profiles with 2 mwere dug in each site in saxaul forest close to each plant sample Totally 18 profiles were dug Twenty four soil properties such as pH ECe SP total soluble Ca2 and Mg2 Cl CO3 HCO3 SO4 gravel CaCO3 CaSO4 organic matter Clay Silt Sand labile phosphorous Na K CEC SAR ESP PSS PSW and TDS were measured for 90 soil samples The plant and thesoil data were examined using two methods 1 the RDA ordination technique and 2 the stepwiseregression analysis then the final relationships were achieved The out coming results show that thesame age plant samples have very high variations in measured vegetation parameters which depends onvariety of the soil properties Based on obtained stepwise regression equations ordination graphs theinteraction between important soil properties and vegetation parameters of H persicum weredistinguished The results showed that the physical properties of the soil such as soil texture andgravel as well as its chemical properties for instance organic matter labile phosphorus CEC salinity alkalinity and CaSO4 have the highest influence on growth parameters of H persicum Theresults indicate that all of vegetative parameters are highly affected by soil characteristics In thisresearch it was further proven that the H persicum age determination is highly accurate using thenumber of bifurcations
