Abstract Poly ethylene terephthalate PET is a semi crystalline alipharomatic polyester posessinginteresting physical and mechanical properties The structure and mechanical properties oftwo different poly ethylene terephthalate fibers types namely anti pill and normal types were studied Fiber structure was determined using different analytical methods The effects of drawingand heat setting conditions on the structure of PET fibers were investigated with the helpof birefringence and crystallinity measurements The crystallization behavior of PET fibersunder relaxed conditions was investigated by Wide Angle X Ray WAXD DifferentionalScanning Calorimetery DSC Fourier Transform Infrared FTIR and densitymeasurments Significant differences between the microstructure of both types wasobserved A better developed crystalline structure with a bigger crystalline size and higher crystallite orientation was observed for the anti pill types Generally crystallinity for normal type was higher in comparison to the anti pill type Inaddition average molecular orientation was higher The better mechanical properties ofconventional PET fiber demonstrated by a higher breaking tenacity and modulus as well aslower elongation at break are due to the observed structural characteristics
