Experimental and Theoretical Investigation on the Effects of Structural Characteristics of PAN Nanofiber Mats on their Transport Properties Sedigheh Borhani sborhani@cc iut ac ir Date of Submission June 11 2008 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran S A Hosseini Ravandi Isfahan University of Technology hoseinir@cc iut ac ir S Gh Etemad Isfahan University of Technology etemad@cc iut ac irAbstractEffects of polymer concentration on the structural characteristics such as fibers diameter surface porosity and surface roughness of nanofiber mats were measured To evaluate thesurface roughness of nanofiber mats new non contact methods such as atomic forcemicroscopy AFM and image analysis methods were used Results showed that increasingthe PAN polymer solution enhanced the nanofibers diameter but reduced the surface porosityof nanofiber mats A structural parameter was introduced and then its relation to the airpermeability and surface roughness of nanofiber mats was investigated The results present astrong dependence between structural parameter and air permeability and the surfaceroughness of nanofiber mats It was also found that there is a good correlation between thesurface roughnesses obtained from two methods Bulk nanofiber mats with different porosity were produced by using a modifiedelectrospinning method The effect of bulk porosity to the air permeability and the coupledheat and moisture transfer of nanofiber mats were investigated by theoretical andexperimental methods A mathematical model was used to describe and predict the coupledheat and moisture transfer of nanofiber mats Although on the basis of the results obtained byscale analysis method order of magnitude of heat transfer by radiation is negligible fornanofiber mats heat transfer by convection is important So two models were used todescribe and predict the coupled heat and moisture transfer of nanofiber mats The modelswere solved numerically by finite difference method and theoretical and experimental resultswere compared to validate the models Experimental results showed that coupled heat and moisture transfer of these nanofiber matsare high By results the presence of nanofiber mats on the substrate tends to considerablereduction in the air permeability but the moisture transfer did not considerably change Theoretical and experimental results were compared and better agreement was observedbetween the experimental and developed model results indicating that the developed modelis satisfactory KeywordsPolyacrylonitril Structural characterization AFM Surface porosity Roughness Heat andmoisture transfer
