Separating of gluon jet and analysis of three jet events in electron positron pair annihilation by cluster and modified Wu Zobernig methods Behzad Khajavi khajavi@ph iut ac ir December 24 2008 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M H Alamatsaz Email alamatsa@cc iut ac irAbstract Hadrons are produced from collision and annihilation of electrons and positrons in high energyaccelerators Electrons and positrons are collided in bunches and outgoing particles are ejected from thecollision point in some cones Each of these cones of hadrons is called a hadronic jet Each event may consist oftwo three or more jets Outgonig hadrons are charged or neutral particles which are detected in detectors Quantities such as momentum mass charge energy etc are recorded or measured by detectors Researchersuse these data and analyse them The data analysed in this thesis are those from the KEK accelerator in Japan These data containinformation about the momenta and electric charge of the outgoing particles for each event In the data information of 341 events from collision of beams of electron and positron each with 30 GeV energy have beenrecorded The analysis of the data provides tests for the theory of strong interactions QCD In this thesis thedata is analysed by using programs in fortran language and mathematica software Two methods are used foranalyzing events and separating hadronic jets The first is the cluster method In this method the developedfortran program determines the number of jets and their axes by means of pattern recognition then jets aresorted by their energies In the second method first of all two jet and three jet events are separated from allevents by means of Dalitz plot This is done using a fortran program and putting cuts on Dalitz plotcomponents Using jets axes in two jet events which are determined by sphericity or thrust one can predict thespin of quarks Also three jet events are used to predict the spin of gluons The spin of gluons is determined in severalmethods in this thesis In one method three jet events recognized by cluster method whose axes are alsodetermined by the method are used to predict the gluon spin In the other method three jet events which areseparated by Dalitz plot are used for this prediction The modified Wu Zobernig method is used to determine theaxes of jets for these three jet events One fortran program and one mathematica program are used in thismethod These programs use three jet events which are separated from other events by Dalitz plot and usemodified Wu Zobernig method to determine the axes of jets in three jet events Of course achieved results arenot so exat because the data are inadequate Obviously more data gives more exact results Keywords pair annihilation event quantum chromodynamics sphericity thrust multiplicity hadronicjet spin
