Design and Manufacturing of Automatic TIG Welding Machine for Automation of Thermocouple Production A H Madadi Najafabadi madadi@me iut ac ir Date of Submission November 1 2008 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University Of Technology Isfahan 84156 8311 Iran 1st S M Safavi Assist Prof Supervisor mosafavi@cc iut ac ir 1st S S Mirian Lecturer Advisor M Keshmiri Assist Prof Department Graduate Coordinator AbstractIn this research work after introduction of thermocouple and explaining its productionprocedure particularly welding processes the procedure of design and manufacturing of anautomatic machine for thermocouple assembly was studied This machine would be appliedin automation of TIG welding process for joining Constantan Wire to Forming whichcompose to make the head of type T thermocouple Several surveys were carried out inIsfahan Industrial Valve Co in order to establish this research work The automated machinewas manufactured as an initial prototype followed by making final prototype using the resultsfrom the initial machine Manufacturing and optimization of vibratory bowl feeder according to theoreticalcomputations as well as manufacturing a parts selector that helps transfer of Forming Parts according to their orientation were important outcomes of this project Furthermore designand manufacturing of a high precision indexing system was another result of this thesis Manufacturing of these parts besides manufacturing of a wire feeder for high precisionfeeding of Constantan Wire provide a cost effective approach for automation ofthermocouple production The completion and test run procedure of the machine would be proceeded by applying someoptimizations in welding process Forming delivery system and considering suggestions inthe final chapter of this dissertation Key WordsThermocouple Production Automatic Assembly Vibratory Bowl Feeder Wire Feeder Rotary Indexing System TIG Welding IntroductionProcess of end to end joining is one of the most sensitive processes of thermocoupleproduction procedure Poor junction connection decalibration and shunt impedance are someof the defects which occur in production of thermocouples 1 On the other hand a manualTIG welding process for joining of Constantan Wire to Steely Forming contain somedrawbacks namely low production rate inconsistency in products physical harms foroperator waste of Tungsten Electrode and influx of Tungsten in conjunction Thereforeusing automatic machine for automation of TIG welding in thermocouple production wouldremove difficulties of manual procedure
