Abstract Designing and constructing an economically competitive structure of adequatestrength and performance that would satisfy the requirements of users for stability maintenance durability and architectural appearance is the most important challenges forcivil and architectural engineers One of the main load carrying parts of all buildingsystems are floors and roofs Floors are bearing the gravity loads and transfer them tovertical load carrying members such as columns and walls In addition floor systemsplay an important role in distribution and transfer of lateral loads between lateral loadcarrying members In this thesis an innovative system of floor and roof construction has beendeveloped employing open web steel joists and pre cast concrete floor panels that joinstogether by small amount of cast in place concrete is the main objective to set up alightweight easy to erection and cost effective floor system The proposed systemdesigned in a way that it has advantages of both prefabricated and compositeconstruction Benefits of employing this method in floor construction are but not limitedto improved quality control and product consistency as a result of employingindustrialized manufacturing methods flexibility in architectural design usable space inthe enclosed roof cavity applicability for vide range of weather conditions and its goodthermal insulation properties In addition there are reductions in cost labor form working and shoring operations time for erection and finishing Steel joists are made oflight angel steel sections The lightweight steel sections and concrete panels means areeasier to handle than conventional flooring so there is less need for special liftingmachinery All these attributes make it excellent alternative to be hired in multistorybuildings The proposed system is adaptable with both steel and reinforced concreteframed structures First in this research and as a real example the proposed system was designed fora floor of an office building Then a computer program was developed in MATLABenvironment to optimize the cost and weight of the floor system for two loadingconditions live loads in office and residential buildings spans and floor depths Thecomputer model uses several parameters in design calculations such as required steelsections for the bottom and top chords of steel joist lenth of concrete panels proportioned to joist spacing and the required I sections for girders Finally result ofcalculations integrated into several tables and lightest and cheapest floor systems fordifferent loadings and geometrical conditions has been indicated Calculations showedthat using of the proposed floor system can reduce the total dead weight of the floors upto 65 or 70 percent in comparison with the current block and joist system that uses inIran
