161 Application of Methyl Imidazolium Hydrogen Sulfate as an Acidic Ionic Liquid in The Oxidation of Sulfides Protection of Hydroxy and Carbonyl Groups Deprotection of Thioacetals and The Synthesis of Some Heterocyclic Compounds Leila Khazdooz lkhazdooz@yahoo com May 13 2009 Department of chemistry Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran Prof A R Hajipour Email haji@cc iut ac ir Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran Abstract In this investigation we used methyl imidazolium hydrogen sulfate as an acidic ionicliquid for some functional groups interconversions A selective and efficient procedure forthe oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides is reported using ceric ammoniumnitrate in the presence of methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate at 80 C Deprotection ofS S acetal compounds to their corresponding carbonyl compounds was carried out usingNH4NO3 Hmim HSO4 at 80 C Aldehydes were converted to the corresponding acylals inthe presence of acetic anhydride and catalytic amount of methylimidazoliumhydrogensulfate at room temperature Acetylation of alcohols and phenols with aceticanhydride were carried out using methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate at 50 C undersolvent free conditions Methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate as Br nsted acidic ionicliquid Hmim HSO4 was used as an efficient catalyst in the Pechmann condensation ofphenols with ketoesters leading to the formation of coumarin under solvent freeconditions Synthesis of 14 aryl or alkyl 14H dibenzo a j xanthenes by condensation of 2 naphthol and aldehydes in the presence of Methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate was carriedout Finally Methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate catalyzed three component condensationreaction of an aldehyde ketoester and urea to afford the corresponding 3 4 dihydropyrimidin 2 1H ones under solvent free conditions Key Words Methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate sulfoxide acylal coumarin 14H dibenzo a j xanthene biginelli 1 Introduction Ionic liquids IL have frequently been used as a green solvent in place of classicalorganic solvents in modern synthetic chemistry Ionic liquids are superior to conventionalorganic solvents due to their extremely low vapor pressure excellent thermal stability reusability and ability to as dissolves many organic and inorganic substrates Sheldon etal 2001 The application of ionic liquids as solvent and catalyst has been reported for a
