Synthesis of Glycidyle Methacrylate GMA grafted polyethylene and application as reactive compatibilizer in blends of polyethylene polyamide6 and polyethylene poly ethylene terephtalate Mohsen Daneshvar m daneshvar@ce iut ac ir 2009 03 04 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi M Masoomi mmasoomi@cc iut ac irAbstract In this research project Medium Density Polyethylene MDPE grafted GlycidylMethacrylate GMA has been synthesized and applied for compatibilization ofMDPE polyamid6 PA6 and MDPE poly ethylene terephtalate PET blends Graftingof GMA onto MDPE has been performed by two different methods molten state andsolid state grafting For the first time in this study solid state grafting of GMA ontoMDPE have been performed using supercritical carbon dioxide SCCO2 as solvent andswelling agent Grafting yield of 91 in molten state and 96 in supercritical conditionhas been achieved Performance and Mechanism of styrene comonomer on graftingreaction has been studied in both methods and it s found that presence of styrene elevatescopolymerization ceiling temperature and prevents depolymerization of grafted GMAmonomers It seems that styrene comonomer in supercritical method isn t as effective asmolten state because of low reaction temperature of this method Four samples coded as C1 C2 C3 and C4 have been applied to compatibilizing ofblends Effect of compatibilizers on mechanical rheological and morphologicalproperties of the blends has been studied by tensile test torque time measurement andScanning Electron Microscopy SEM Results revealed that presence of compatibilizersin blends has increased torque and elongation at break 60 and 250 respectively Alsodiameter of dispersed phase particles was a quarter of particle diameters inuncompatibilized blends Furthermore processing effect on blends properties have beenstudied in this project It s found that samples prepared with mono screw extruder haveheterogeneous morphology and poor mechanical properties because of improperdispersion and distribution mixing of extruder Keywords Glycidyl Methacrylate Grafting Compatibilizer PE PA6 PET Blending
