126Investigation of the Sugar Beet Plant Yield and Characteristics under Different Saline Irrigation Water Managements Safoora Hamedani saha 150@yahoo com March 3 2009 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiM Heidarpour heidar@cc iut ac irE Landi slandy@cc iut ac irAbstractFood supply and satisfaction of the human basic needs are objectives of agricultural section Aspopulation increases these needs increases and it is necessary to increase agricultural products During thelast decades it seems that with increasing population the importance of irrigated lands has increased butthe issues such as soil salinity erosion and shortage of water resources have only led to 1 annual growthin irrrigated lands in the world This growth rate is even negative in many places of dry belt in the earthand the sources of this God given gift is diminishing Most countries over the world are using theirexisting surface water resources Therefore access to good quality water resources for agriculturalpurpose has diminished and what has remained is low quality such as salty underground water and waterdrainage Due to high amount of salt or sodium in these waters it would not be possible to access tosustainable agriculture without applying appropriate management methods Iran is among arid andsemiarid places of the world with average precipitation of about 250 mm per year Almost 15 of thelands in Iran suffer from salinity and high sodium level The available reports indicate that the ascendingtrend of this problem Also the extent of saline and sodium lands in Isfahan province has been estimatedabove 3000000 acres Roudasht area in southeast of Isfahan with an area of about 50000 to 60000 acresis among these lands In order to study the influence of salinity of irrigation water water managementusage and leaching on yield and characteristics of sugar beet a study was conducted with collaboration ofIsfahan agriculture research center in Roudahst research station In this research three treatments of waterquality with salinity of 2 8 and 12 dS m Q1 Q2 and Q3 as main factor and two leaching treatmentsincluding a treatment without applying leaching LR0 and treatment with leaching in order to achieve75 performance LR1 were used Also two irrigation management treatments including a treatmentwith applying water with 2 dS m salinity from the beginning of cultivation until establishment of plantand then applying water with various qualities until harvesting was applied GU Another irrigationmanagement treatment was applying water with various qualities from the beginning to the end ofcultivation season GQ The experiment was performed as split split plots based on completerandomized blocks design using four replications in a soil with silty clay loam texture The resultsshowed that salinity of irrigation water have significant effect on root yield white sugar content whitesugar yield shoot yield mellas sugar No3 root sodium and root potassium Increasing the salinity ofirrigation water caused root yield white sugar content and white sugar yield to decrease and increasedthe shoot yield mellas sugar No3 Na and K Irrigation management caused significant difference on white sugar content shoot yield mellas sugar and K With GU management shoot yield mellas sugarand K increased and white sugar content decreased The leaching caused white sugar content sugarcontent and white sugar yield to increase and decreased the mellas sugar and Na Interaction of salinity ofirrigation water and irrigation management caused Na to decrease Interaction of salinity of irrigationwater and leaching caused significant difference on root yield sugar yield and K Interaction of irrigationmanagement and leaching caused shoot yield mellas sugar and K to decrease Key Words Salinity Irrigation management Sugar beet Leaching White sugarcontent Root yield Sugar content White sugar yield
