Effect of Four Rose Varieties on Biological Characteristics of Tetranychus urticae Koch and the Predaceous Bug Orius albidipennis Reuter and Its Predatory Characteristics Golnaz Salehipour Shirazi 8 3 2009 gsalehipour@yahoo com College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi1 Prof Bijan Hatami supervisor bhatami@cc iut ac ir2 Prof Rahim Ebadi supervisor ebadir@cc iut ac irAbstract Two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch is one of the most important key pests in cut roseglasshouses Control of spider mites due to resistance to a broad spectrum of pesticides has become so difficultin many glasshouses A promised approach to solve this problem is biological control The goal of this studywas to investigate the influence of various rose varieties on biological control of two spotted spidermite bypredaceous bug Orius albidipennis Reuter The life table parameters of T urticae on the four rose varieties included Anouk Cool water Marroussia and Vendetta were calculated under glasshouse conditions The lifetable parameters of the predaceous bug O albidipennis were determined on these rose varieties underlaboratory conditions at a temperature of 25 1 C 65 5 relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16 8 L D h To investigate the influence of different rose varieties on predatory characteristics of predaceous bug totalconsumption and functional response of O albidipennis on T urticae evaluated on each rose variety under thesimilar laboratory conditions The effect of rose varieties on the control of T urticae population by thepredatory bug O albidipennis was investigated under the glasshouse conditions Olfactory responses of femalesof T urticae and O albidipennis to the herbivore induced plant volatiles HIPVs of each rose variety weredetermined Different rose varieties significantly affected the life table parameters of T urticae The highestintrinsic rate of population increase of T urticae was observed on the variety Vendetta 0 231female female day and the lowest was on the variety Cool water 0 182 female female day Although none ofthe rose varieties could significantly affect the biological and reproductive characteristics of O albidipennissimilar to the T urticae the most intrinsic rate of increase was observed on the variety Vendetta 0 135female female day and the least on Cool water 0 122 female female day Due to these results the varietyVendetta was the most suitable and Cool water the most unsuitable varieties for both T urticae and O albidipennis Predation of O albidipennis females on eggs and females of T urticae followed a type IIfunctional response on all four rose varieties and none of the varieties could affect the functional responseparameters significantly In all varieties in spite of shorter handling time of O albidipennis on T urticae eggscompared to females the higher resting time caused a lower searching rate of predatory bug on eggs of T urticae There were no significant differences in the number of prey eggs consumed by the predaceous bug onfour rose varieties However predation rate of O albidipennis on varieties Anouk and Vendetta wassignificantly higher than on Cool water and Marroussia The most consumption and age specific predation rateof the predaceous bug was observed in third and the least in first nymphal instars The results of olfactometryexperiments revealed that there are differences in response of T urticae and O albidipennis to the volatilesemitted by uninfested plants of four rose varieties This might be due to qualitative or quantitative differences inchemical compounds of volatiles emitted by various varieties HIPVs of all four rose varieties act as a repellantfor T urticae except the variety Vendetta and an attractant for the predaceous bug females Consequentlydifferent rose varieties could produce different compounds of HIPVs The effect of O albidipennis on control ofthe population of T urticae on Cool water as unsuitable variety for spider
