Application of Insect Growth Regulators Pyriproxyfen and Buprofezin for Controlling Onion Thrips Thrips tabaci Lind in Intercropping of Onion and Tobacco Maryam Babady Akasheh m babady 175 @ yahoo com 14 March 2009 Department of Plant Protection Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M SC Language FarsiRahim Ebadi ebadir @cc iut ac irAbstract Onion Allium cepa L is one of the native plants of Iran This valuable crop is damaged by many kindsof pests during its growth period in the field and also in the storage One of the important pests of onion isThrips tabaci Lind which is a very polyphagous species and causes high crop damage and yield loss Several sustainable methods of control have been developed in recent years for reducing thrips damage infield vegetable crops As a result more selective insecticides insect growth regulators are now beingintroduced into crop production This has helped to overcome some of the problems that occur when pestinsects develop resistance to certain insecticides One sustainable method of control is intercropping inwhich two or more species of plants which are hosts of a pest are intercropped to lower the damage madeby the pest or to trap the pest and eliminate it In order to study the application of insect growth regulators Pyriproxyfen and Buprofezin for controlling onion thrips Thrips tabaci Lind in intercropping of onionand tobacco during two agriculture years the seeds were planted in plots as a split split plot experiment ina randomized block design with three replications The plots were onion monocrop and onion tobaccointercrop The main treatments were profenofos buprofezin pyriproxyfen buprofezin pyriproxyfen andwater control and secondary treatment were Ghom and Dorcheh onion cultivars Thrips population andpercentage of injury on plants degree of top leef curling fresh and dry weight plant height and bulbingratio of plants were determined Also after harvest the yield and the effect of spraying on the cultivarswere determind During the second year of study the effect of insect growth regulator on the abundanceof pest and injury to onion plants were studied The results showed that population of thrips on differentthreatments were significantly different In the first year buprofezin pyriproxyfen treatment showedminimum population density of thrips But in the second year pyriproxyfen treatment showed minimumpopulation density of thrips Threatments showed no significant difference on the other traits Significantdifferent abserved between traits of cultivars Dorcheh showed maximum population density of thrips andpercentage of injury but Ghom had minimum of these characters Dorcheh had minimum of fresh and dryweigh plant height and yield Ghom showed the maximum fresh and dry weight plant height and yield tThe large differences observed for most traits are due to high genetic diversity among cultivars Comparison of traits in different times of sampling showed a significant differernce for populationdensity of thrips percentage of injury degree of top leaf curling fresh and dry weight of plant plantheight and bulbing ratio Comparison of traits at different places onion monocrop and onion tobaccointercrop showed a significant differernce for population density of thrips fresh and dry weight of plantand plant height Correlation analysis indicated that population density of thrips was correlated positivelywith perecentage of injury but population density and perecentage of injury showed negative correlationwith plant height Also plant height had positive correlation with fresh and dry weight of plant Freshweight had positive correlation with dry weight of plant Bulbing ratio had positive correlation with freshand dry weight of plant Among the treatments applied pyriproxyfen was more effective in control ofthrips population than others Although tobacco didn t decrease the thrips population in intercroppingwith onion but it caused an increase in fresh and dry weight and plant
