Effect of Temporal Variability in Soil Hydraulic Properties on Water and Solute Transport Modeling Mohsen Zare Mohsenzareasezar@yahoo com March 1 2009 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiMajid Afyuni afyuni@cc iut ac irKarim Abbaspour k abbaspour@yahoo comAbstractAccurate prediction of water flow and solute transport in soils requires the use of conceptual andmathematical models using accurate description of soil hydraulic properties Uncertainty is a serious problemin modeling and should be addressed in a comprehensive manner using all available information Temporalvariability in soil hydraulic prosperities is main reason of uncertainty in hydrological models Traditionalmodeling approaches do not include temporal variability in soil hydraulic parameters The objectives of thisresearch are i to quantify temporal variability of soil hydraulic properties resulting from sewage sludgeamendment ii to determine the effects of temporal variability in soil hydraulic properties on chloride Cl and copper Cu transport in a calcareous soil and iii to investigate the applicability of inverse estimation ofhydraulic parameters to reduce uncertainty Topsoil physical properties including bulk density saturatedhydraulic conductivity water stable aggregates and water retentions at 33 and 1500 kPa were measured at23 85 148 221 330 530 days after application of sewage sludge at 0 25 50 and 100 Mg ha 1 Chloride andDTPA extractable Cu concentrations were measured three different times 350 1700 and 2450 day after ofsludge application at 20 cm intervals to a depth of 100 cm HYDRUS 1D program was employed to modelthe effect of temporal variability of soil hydraulic properties on water and solute transport Two scenarioswere tested First the direct modeling was used to simulate transport of Cl and Cu in soil profile using themeasured temporally different soil hydraulic properties In the second scenario inverse modeling was appliedusing the measured hydraulic properties as initial estimates Temporal variability in soil physical propertieswere observed in different sampling dates in the control and sludge treated plots Unsaturated hydraulicconductivity is key parameters in flow transport modeling in soil The Ks had the highest temporal variability The RETC software was used for estimation of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity in different sampling datesbased on soil physical properties and van Geunchten 1980 and Mualem 1976 equations Unsaturatedhydraulic conductivity also showed a temporal variability Chloride and Cu concentrations were simulatedusing soil hydraulic properties that were estimated for different sampling dates in deferent scenarios The Cl transport was predicted in control plots and the 50 Mg ha 1 sludge treatment only The model wassimulated in seven scenarios using of six different measuring input parameters and mean of measuring
