Design Development and Evaluation of a Sugarcane Billet Planter Equipped with Metering Unit with Overlap Planting Pattern Moslem Namjoo moslem namjoo@ag iut ac ir February 9 2009 Department of Agricultural Machinery Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Jalil Razavi jrazavi@cc iut ac ir Abstract Billet planters are machines used in mechanized sugarcane planting operations Amount of billet consumed andplanting pattern are two important factors in mechanized cane planting operations From an economical aspectreduction of billet consumption could be significant in terms of production cost reduction This may be achievedwith modification of current billet planters metering mechanisms or application of new planters equipped with moreaccurate metering devices Several works presented by various researchers were reviewed and finally the best planwas selected for design development and evaluation Array of cupboards attached on chain conveyor were used inmetering device for transportation of billets to the furrow The mechanism used to exclude extra billets was effectiveand at the same time simple in design and construction Proposed chain conveyor supplied the predetermined overlapor without overlap in billet planting To design the metering device some biophysical properties of sugarcane billetwere considered The main chassis of the planter was designed having in mind the necessity to put two rows of billet50 centimeters apart from a double metering devices bed Two furrow openers were placed a head of the meteringdevices for opening planting bed Ground driven power train was used to run the metering devices hence providinga constant billet overlap planting pattern according to change of forward speed The power train mainly consisted ofa differential universal joints and power rod connecting disconnecting clutch and two wheels Internal shoeclutch was designed for seize and connect the power from ground wheels to metering devices and safekeeping themfrom overload A hydraulic ram was used to actuate the clutch Also two one way hydraulic rams were used tochange the position of the planter drawbar and consequently lower the furrow openers and reversely Solid worksand Cosmos works software were used for technical modeling drawing and analyzing of designed component The planter was evaluated in the field based on the percent filling of the cupboards over overlapping andunder overlapping planting patterns as affected by planting speed 2 3 and 4 km h cane variety with and withoutdebris and angle of the chain conveyor structure from vertical line 25 30 degree with three replications The aimof this field evaluation was to determine the best operation speed and level of billet consumption rate A split splitplot experiment with a completely randomized design was used to determine effect of speed of planting and angle ofthe chain conveyor on percent filling of cupboards over overlapping and under overlapping indexes Data obtainedfrom experiments were analyzed using SAS statistical software Results indicated that effect of speed of planting andangle of chain conveyor to vertical line on three parameters had a significant difference so that with an increase inspeed of planting and decrease in angle of chain conveyor under overlapping decreased and percent filling of thecupboards and over overlapping increased Effect of the interaction of the cane variety and chain conveyor on under overlapping and percent filling of cupboards was observed to be significantly different For the best workingcondition a planting speed of 2 km h for both cane variety gives the best results A Vertical angle of 30 and 25degrees was found to be best suited for with and without debris varieties respectively Key words Sugarcane Planter Billet Planting Metering Device Overlap Pattern
