Design and simulation of an automated system for plastic resinsseparation from each other in municipal wastes Hamed Masoumi h masoumi@me iut ac ir 2009 03 09 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiAssist Prof Seyed Mohsen Safavi mosafavi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe aim of this thesis is design and simulation of an automated system for separation ofplastic resins from each other in municipal wastes In order to do this the existing methodsof plastic resins separation have been reviewed and a proper system has been proposed forthis task The proposed separation system was simulated using Visual Nastran software This system includes three units namely identification control and throw unit Theprinciple of operation of identification unit is based on Near Infrared NIR reflectancespectroscopy The reflectance spectrum of several various plastic samples from PET HDPE PVC PP and PS that mostly exist in municipal wastes stream were taken indifferent wavelength domains On the basis of these reflectance spectrums two separatealgorithms have been obtained for identification of plastic resins from each other Thesetwo algorithms are called Two Filters and Second Derivative based on their natureaccordingly In Two Filters method algorithm two specific wavelengths of spectrum inthe near infrared domain have been utilized Also in Second Derivative methodalgorithm the majority of this wavelength domain has been used By surveying the effectof various parameters such as surface pollution sample thickness and existence of labeland cap it was shown that both algorithms have the high efficiency in identification ofresins The algorithms have been developed for identification of HDPE and PP resinsbased on their colors These algorithms have significant results The spectrum of visibledomain has been used in them Furthermore an algorithm was developed for identificationof plastic resins glass and paper so called Four Filters The LabVIEW software and dataacquisition card are used in control unit The main task of control unit is execution ofidentification and recognition algorithms of desired material and then the transmission ofsuitable command to the throw unit After the necessary surveys the Advantech PCI 1710 data acquisition card was selected for control unit This card is very suitable in datareception from identification unit and its transmission to the computer due to itsproperties This card has been also utilized for transmission of command to throw unit Themethod of card configuration for computer was surveyed The programs of data receptionvia card and command transmission have been developed in LabVIEW software and byusing the card driver software In addition the identification programs based on theobtained algorithms for identification unit were developed in LabVIEW According to theaccomplished surveys the speed of analysis and calculations in relation with algorithms inLabVIEW is compatible with the speed of the separation system In throw unit thepossibility of utilization of electro pneumatic valve has been surveyed In order to achievethis purpose the simulation of throw action was performed in Visual Nastran software andthe necessary force of throw was obtained Finally it can be said that the proposedseparation system is a fast accurate proper and ideal system for separation of plasticresins Key WordsPlastic Separation NIR reflectance spectroscopy Visual Nastran LabVIEW
