۱۰۴ Distributed Spectrum Access in Multi Class Networks via Auction Mechanism Mohammadreza Ataei Naeini mohamadreza ataei@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 07 28 2009 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor A M Doost Hoseini alimdh@cc iut ac irAbstract In recent years due to the increasing demand for wireless communications and the bandwidthlimitations as the primary resource new approaches for optimal bandwidth utilization such as UltraWide Band UWB and Cognitive Radios CR have been introduced This study focuses on someaspects of the Cognitive Radios One of the most important concepts in Cognitive Radios is theSpectrum Sharing among different users The goal of this concept is to maximize the overallrevenue e g throughput Quality of Service QoS etc achieved by the network Game Theory isone of the tools that can be used for analyzing and designing these processes One of the maingoals in dividing a supply among some demanding users is fairness Auctions as a part of GameTheory are used for distribiting the users shares in a decentralized manner In this approach anycontestant with regard to his requirements will pay for the resource and the fairness is applied sothat everyone will be acquiescent In the communication theory perspective this need is calledQuality of Service QoS Distribuetd spectrum allocation among the requesting users based on thewell known methods in Auction Theroy is addressed in this work Methods for applying current MAC protocols e g WiMAX WLAN etc will be studied Someimportant concepts in Game Theory especially Mechanism Design as an important part andmethods for using these concepts will be introduced The proposed algorithm description followsthese preliminaries This distributed algorithm is based on Auction Theory and executed by thenetwork users These users are classified into two sets The first set contains primary users whohave the absolute priority of using the spectrum The second set includes secondary users who usethe spectrum if the formers do not The use of spectrum by secondary users is assumed to be knownto the primary users To achieve more fairness in slot acquisition by users a delay concernedversion of the Auction is introduced In this type of Auction the value of the present bid submittedby a user is based on the number of previous slots which the user failed to get it Simulating theproposed algorithm for several wireless scenarios and comparing the results with optimal solutionis another step To obtain the optimal result centeralized algorithms are considered In thesealgorithms there is a unit that has the complete information of the network its topology etc Thisknowledge is gained through a costly procedure These centralized algorithms find the optimal semi optimal solution of the spectrum allocation for network users Key Words Decentralized Spectrum Access Auction Theory Multiclass Networks Cognitive Radio
